Organization Development
The field of organization development is
a strategy for reorienting management behavior. The clinical
interpretation of organizational development (OD) is
"medicine" for an "unhealthy" organization. Its
inception was the result of frustrated psychologists who wanted to
transfer what they were learning in group therapy sessions to the work
place. Practitioners of OD focus on relationships, feelings, attitudes,
group norms, perceptions, and communications. They strive to help
management "flatten" their organizations and empower workers
to contribute their ideas and minds. The basic premise of OD is
adherence to the basic value of humanism.
The objective of OD practitioners is to
increase organization effectiveness and health of the organization by
creating work environments where employees take pride in their work,
feel a part of the organization, and grow and develop. Practitioners in
concert with top management accomplish these objectives by carrying out
planned interventions in the organization's "processes," using
behavioral science knowledge. OD practitioners focus on areas of
training and development, process improvement, team development, job
design, performance coaching, and employee recognition systems, to name
a few. The main components found in organization development are
training, team building,
leadership, change management, strategic planning, organizational analysis and business process improvement. |
